LOCATION AND MEMBERS 1. UNITRAUNITRA was established in 1976 within the historical context of apartheid and at the request of the government of the Transkei homeland. Its policies and programs are primarily directed towards redressing imbalances of the past while at the same time endeavouring to meet challenges of the present and the future. UNITRA’s mission is to advance, transmit and utilize knowledge of the highest quality in order to meet popular regional and national development needs for the betterment of the quality of life of all South Africans, with special sensitivity towards the historically disadvantaged majority. The modern campus today is situated on the outskirsts of the City of Umtata. Considerable progress has been made in training students in areas which were not traditionally available to black South Africans, these areas include economic sciences, science and medical and health sciences. RHODES UNIVERSITY Rhodes University was founded by Act of Parliament on May 31, 1904. It has a history of high achievement and is an institution committed to meeting the challenges of the present and the future. VISTA UNIVERSITY Vista University was established in terms of Act 106 of 1981 and came into being on 1 January 1982 with a central administrative office in Pretoria and decentralized campuses in the main black urban areas. In addition the Distance Education Campus in Pretoria was taken over from the Department of Education and Training on 1 April 1982. Its original purpose was to improve the qualifications of teachers by means of distance tuition. Vista University's first academic year began on 1 January 1983.
It is a multi-campus, mixed-mode university providing tertiary education at
seven contact campuses based in major black urban areas and correspondence study
through a Distance Education Campus based in Pretoria. EASTERN CAPE TECHNIKON The youngest technikon in South Africa, bringing progress through technology to the Eastern Cape on four SERTEC accredited campuses : Butterworth Main Campus, East London, Queenstown and Umtata. National Diplomas and B Tech Degrees in Faculties of Engineering, Business Sciences and Applied Technology. UNIVERSITY OF PORT ELIZABETH The University of Port Elizabeth is a learning community with a clear focus on development. Our programmes and services are informed by our societal context and reflect our commitment to be a major provider of cutting-edge knowledge wand well-equipped leaders. Founded in 1964, the University of Port Elizabeth is a multi-cultural institution of some 6000 on-campus students, with a further 9200 enrolled in distance education programmes. UPE is at the forefront of political and educational transformation of higher education in South Africa. A wide variety of under- and postgraduate programmes are offered in the faculties of Arts, Economic Sciences, Education, Health Sciences, Law and Science. PORT ELIZABETH TECHNIKON The Port Elizabeth Technikon is situated on the East Coast of Southern Africa in the vibrant coastal city, Port Elizabeth. "The Friendly City" as Port Elizabeth is also fondly referred to, has a population figure of 1,2m and is the economic powerhouse of the Eastern Cape Province. The PE Technikon took its first baby steps as the Port Elizabeth School of Art on 17 February 1882. Now, 117 years later, our institution has grown to a triple campus Technikon occupying more than 670 418 sqm, with a family of more than 10 000 registered students in 1999 and close to 700 full-time staff members. The vision of the PE Technikon is to be the First Choice Technological University in Southern Africa. BORDER TECHNIKON The Border Technikon is a unique tertiary institution aimed at providing relevant technologically trained and vocationally-skilled manpower in response to market requirements with a private sector, joint venture approach. TECHNIKON SOUTHERN AFRICA Technikon SA is the largest institute for career-related tertiary education in Southern Africa and offers something special – the opportunity to qualify in a chosen career no matter where the student lives or works. Approximately 1998 over 75 000 students registered at Technikon SA for courses which will support their career development. Technikon SA promotes the concept of lifelong learning, which enables learners to improve their qualifications at any stage of their careers. The courses at Technikon SA are drawn up with specific careers in mind and are market-related. Technikon education goes hand-in-hand with work experience, so when they qualify, students are ready for the job. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA The University of South Africa, also known as Unisa, is one of 11 mega distance teaching universities in the world. It was established in 1873 as the University of the Cape of Good Hope. To ensure the status of the university, hence the recognition of degrees conferred by it, the university administration hastened to apply for a royal charter. The governor, Sir Henry Barkly, made representations to the Queen and the charter was granted in 1877. In 1916 its name was changed to the University of South Africa. Under its auspices several colleges became autonomous universities. Over fifty years ago, in 1946, Unisa pioneered tertiary distance education in the western world, a move which heralded the beginning of Unisa as we know it today. Distance education provides a unique opportunity to all who wish to further their studies and who cannot attend residential institutions because of personal circumstances or occupational obligationsThe University is located in Pretoria, and its impressive campus on Muckleneuk Ridge is a major landmark of the capital city. It has provincial centres in Cape Town, Durban and Pietersburg, Nelspruit and Umtata.
